Slowing Down in an ‘Over’ World

Does it sometimes feel like everything is “over”? Overdone, overscheduled, overstimulated, overloaded, overthinking, overachieving… even the food we eat is overprocessed. Life can feel like it’s running in overdrive, leaving balance just out of reach.

This constant “over” can dysregulate your nervous system and leave you feeling overwhelmed. I know this well—it was one of the biggest areas I had to focus on when managing my own stress. It required a mindset shift, practiced over time. Too often, success is measured by how busy we are, how much we’re achieving, or how “productive” we appear. But this busyness often leads straight to burnout.

Here are some gentle reminders to carry with you this week:

  • Rest is not lazy. Rest is essential for recharging and coming back to balance. Notice how you feel—if you’re tired or overwhelmed, it’s okay to say no and stay home.

  • Breathe and reflect instead of scrolling. Phones, news, and screens constantly stimulate us. Try conscious breathing exercises and journaling instead—they help you reset and process your thoughts. Try this post to get started.

  • Self-care is essential. Take baths, meditate, read, or get a massage. Small, intentional practices help restore balance.

  • Move your body, even gently. Exercise doesn’t have to be intense to help regulate your nervous system. A walk outside, stretching, or gentle movement can help you release tension and feel grounded.

  • Get back to nature. Grounding into the earth and being in nature has a calming effect on the body. Even short walks outside, feeling grass under your feet, or sitting near trees can restore balance and ease.

  • Simplify your environment. Clutter and overstimulation in your space can add to mental overload. Take a few minutes to tidy up, put things away, or create a calm corner just for you.

  • Limit decision fatigue. When your brain is already overwhelmed, making choices adds stress. Plan meals, outfits, or daily tasks in advance to lighten the load on your mind.

  • Check in with yourself emotionally. Pause throughout the day and ask: How am I feeling right now? What do I need? Recognizing your feelings gives you the chance to respond, not react.

  • Connect intentionally. Social media and constant notifications can drain you. Choose interactions that feel nourishing—calls or messages with friends who uplift you, rather than scrolling endlessly.

Remember, life doesn’t have to be all ‘over.’ You deserve moments of calm, clarity, and rest. Start where you are, one breath at a time.
